What's on the CD?
"BBS IN A BOX" is the first CD ever produced for the Macintosh BBS that provides over 7,000 Macintosh files in compressed format with directories for BBS use. These directories are provided on eighteen topics including Art, Business, DA's, Games, Films, Newsletter Articles, HyperCard, Music, MIDI, Mac II, Movies, Telecommunications, Utilities, Word Processing and more!
Not only will you find over 6,700 files available in compressed format in the "Files" folder on the CD but also image files of over 70 of the AMUG "Best of" series disks. Each image may be copied from your favorite topic folder using DiskCopy and placed on an 800K disk for distribution to User Group members or other non-profit groups. There are approximately 70 "Best of" Disks which are compiled by topic now and more are growing each month. These libraries are a wealth of information and a rich resource for any library.
That's not all! In the CD Setup folder you will find Menus that may be altered to fit your Second Sight path names and utilized with the Second Sight™ directories provided on the CD.
Telefinder™ descriptions have been written to over 7,000 files on the CD as well. Selecting the "Get info" comments while using Telefinder will display these descriptions on your Telefinder BBS.
Another feature of this CD is a text file directory of all of the files on the CD located in AMUG CD:Files:Apple:. This file is called Allfiles.db and is tab delineated so that you may import the data into your favorite database. This information may also be displayed and searched with a DA included on the disk called Edit DA. This database contains the file name, BBS name, version, date, description and more. This tab delineated data can be used to create databases or other BBS directories.
In addition, each of the 18 topic folders have an alpha and a date listing of the files in that specific topic in the same tab delineated format with Name, path, version, date, and description as well. Your BBS users or yourself may then use these text directories to search for desirable files off line and to create powerful search databases. In this way, any particular file will be easier to find and know what it does. This tool is great for answering those tough questions like. "Do you have this?" or "Do you have anything that does that?" You will find these text files great for navigation through this huge CD data. Another search tool available is the On Location directory on the disk in the Utility folder. Simply use On Location to search for files, data or information.
More.... with this drive utilized over Tops it will automount so that you can access it while your BBS users are downloading from it at the same time. This automount feature will allow you to use it on AppleTalk networks and not have to remount it on reboots. The CD files are easy to select through the On Location directory, the text directories and the alphabetical folder hierarchy within each topic. This drive will be able to work with Desktop Manager or the normal Desktop as well.
Decompression.... This CD includes a directory specifically for your users to obtain the decompression utilities easily. This unstuffer folder within the Files folder contains Stuffit 1.51, Stuffit Classic, Stuffit Delux Unstuffer, Compactor, Disk Doubler and more. Disk Doubler is my favorite and can be installed as an init to decompress the majority of files which are in Stuffit 1.51 and Disk Doubler (DD) format.
We hope to update "BBS IN A BOX" every 6-9 months based on the support for this product. We believe that this CD should make setting up a BBS complete with files an easy chore and regular updates keep new files aboard and make upgrading as simple as inserting a new disk. At $99.00 per CD, BBS operators and User Groups cannot afford to be without "BBS IN A BOX."
